Nancy Birdsall

Nancy is the founding president of the Center for Global Development, a think tank devoted to improving the policies of wealthy countries toward developing countries, from aid to trade and often beyond. It is distinctive for not just generating ideas but for getting those ideas implemented. Before founding CGD, Nancy held senior positions at the Inter-American Development Bank and the World Bank and was director of the Economic Reform Project at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. She is the co-author of Cash on Delivery: A New Approach to Foreign Aid.

Within the “walls” of CGD1 you have both Dean Karlan and Lant Pritchett—perhaps polar opposites in terms of their perspectives on RCT’s usefulness in development. Given that CGD’s explicit goal is to influence the world, how do you fit together people who have such strongly held but differing opinions on how to do that?
